L2 is a partial view of intention mixed with games. Beginners lose money trying to read the book like a novel.
You'll hear veterans narrate every refresh like sports commentary. Some of that skill is real. A lot of it is hindsight voiceover. Your job in month one isn't to become a mind reader — it's to stop letting the book override a written plan.
I spent a chunk of my early years inventing spoof stories. Made me late and paranoid. Plan got quieter. Fills got less stupid.
### Ignore first (first 30 days)
1. **Spoof narratives you can't prove** — size appears and vanishes. Logging every "spoof" makes you paranoid and late.
2. **Absolute size worship** — 5,000 shares on a thin name is not the same object as 5,000 on a liquid ETF.
3. Chat calls of "they're absorbing" with no rule attached to *your* account.
4. Depth that exists only on one venue while your order routes elsewhere — you're not seeing *your* fill path.
5. Fancy color themes. Cosmetics aren't microstructure skill.
### Watch instead
1. **Spread behavior into your entry** — widening into a breakout is a tax, not a dare.
2. **Refresh stutter** — learn platform lag vs a real book.
3. How price trades through a level — hesitant probes vs initiative bursts.
4. Your queue expectations — join bid in a fast tape and expect instant fills? You misunderstand priority.
5. Alignment with tape — L2 without time & sales (when you have it) is half a conversation.
### 2-week onboarding
**Week A:** liquid names, chart + tape. Journal fills vs intent.
**Week B:** add L2 as a **veto filter** (e.g. "no chase if spread > X"). Still no story trades.
### Daily micro exercise (5 minutes)
Pick one level. Write before the touch: *what would invalidate this for me?* After: *did L2 add information or noise?* Keep the ratio honest.
### Personal rule
If L2 and the plan disagree, the plan wins until you have ~100 reviewed trades showing otherwise. L2 supports a plan. It does not replace one.
Are you using L2 as veto, trigger, or decoration right now?
What's your spread veto number on the names you actually trade?
Anyone journal "L2 helped / L2 noise" for a month — did the ratio surprise you?
Tape + L2 or L2 alone — what do you run live?
Level 2 for Beginners — What to Ignore First
Re: Level 2 for Beginners — What to Ignore First
Agree on the month-one ignore list. Early on I invented spoof novels for every refresh. Made me late and paranoid. The book got quieter when the plan got louder.
What I tell newer equity scalpers:
L2 is a partial view of intention mixed with games. Your job in the first 30 days isn't mind-reading — it's refusing to let the book override a written trigger and invalidation.
Ignore first (same spirit as yours): unprovable spoof stories; absolute size worship (5,000 shares on a thin name is not the same object as 5,000 on a liquid ETF); chat calls of "they're absorbing" with no rule attached; refreshing the book mid-trigger instead of executing the plan.
Do first: spread at your entry window, print speed change, your trigger, your invalidation. If those four are clear, L2 is secondary confirmation at best.
I'll add one practical rail: if L2 "information" would change your size or cancel a planned A-setup, write why in one sentence before you act. If you can't write it, you're negotiating with noise.
