GFS ~+4–5%: $2B, 5-year deal to make silicon interposers for TSMC's CoWoS in Malta NY — volume ramp 1H 2028

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

GlobalFoundries announced before the open that it has a manufacturing agreement with TSMC to supply silicon interposers for TSMC's CoWoS advanced-packaging ecosystem from its Malta, New York fab. GFS was ~+4% pre-market and held roughly +4–5% through midday, while most AI hardware names were red.

The facts:
- $2B agreement with an initial five-year term. GF provides the manufacturing service and adds capacity in Malta.
- GF says it would be the first US-based source of silicon interposers for advanced packaging, including embedded deep-trench capacitor parts.
- Volume production only starts ramping in 1H 2028. That means no near-term revenue, but it's a framework that can be expanded if demand keeps growing.
- Context: advanced packaging (CoWoS) is one of the main bottlenecks for AI accelerator supply, so a US second source is a real strategic win.

How I'd trade it:
- Relative strength stands out today. GFS is green while COHR, LITE, BE and the AI data-centre names sold off with the 10y around 5.3%. If it closes near the highs on a red tape, that's a tell for tomorrow.
- The numbers are modest against GF's revenue base and back-end loaded, so the gap is about the narrative. Expect follow-through to depend on the AI tape, not the deal itself.
- Day-2 plan: hold above today's VWAP/low and it's a trend name. Lose it and the move probably gets faded with the sector.

Is this a one-day relative-strength play or the start of a re-rating for GFS? Anyone watching for packaging peers to move in sympathy?
