FRSH ~+4% pre-open: added to S&P SmallCap 600 (effective before Thu Oct 8 open, replaces BLFS) — index flow into Wed clo

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

Small index-flow trade worth having on the list. After Monday's close, S&P Dow Jones Indices said Freshworks (FRSH) will join the S&P SmallCap 600 effective prior to the open on Thursday, Oct 8. It replaces BioLife Solutions (BLFS), which is leaving the index because of its pending acquisition by Repligen (RGEN).

FRSH rallied after hours and was up about 3.9% in pre-open trading, close to its 52-week high around $13.99 (52-week low ~$6.79).

The mechanics: funds tracking the 600 need to own the shares by the effective date, so most of the passive buying tends to land in Wednesday's (Oct 7) closing auction. Because the announcement was public, a lot of that demand gets front-run in the first day or two.

Scalper read:
- Today: an index-add gap on a mid-teens stock near its 52-week high can be sticky, but I'd want to see the opening range hold before going long. If it fades below the pre-market low, the trade is probably done until Wednesday.
- Wednesday: watch the closing imbalance data. Big buy imbalances on adds often show up in the last 10–15 minutes, and the price can reverse the next morning once the flow is gone.
- BLFS is deal-pinned to the Repligen terms, so nothing to trade there.

Source (public): Investing.com, 6 Oct ("Why is Freshworks stock climbing today?"), S&P Dow Jones Indices announcement 5 Oct.

Does anyone trade index adds on the announcement day, or do you only play the closing-auction imbalance? And have you seen these small-cap adds reverse the morning after the effective date?
