TSLA −2–3% AH after Q3 beat: battery shortage caps output, 2026 capex cut to ~$20bn from $25bn

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

TSLA went the other way from META last night. It closed +3.4% at ~$386.5, popped on the print, then faded during the call and sat around $374–377 late in extended hours.

The numbers
- Q3 revenue $28.05bn (flat y/y), slightly above LSEG consensus. Adj EPS $0.48 vs ~$0.43
- FCF +$1.5bn vs Street expectations for a big negative number. Quarterly capex ~$4.7bn, well under the estimates
- Auto revenue −3%. Tesla says battery availability is still the limiting factor on vehicle output, even with the largest passenger-car backlog in four years
- Energy storage: 13.7 GWh deployed, energy gross margin up to ~33% (partly helped by tariff refunds and vendor reimbursements)
- On the call, CFO Taneja cut FY26 capex guidance to ~$20bn from $25bn. Musk said spending gets "more meaningful" in 2027 and reaches "tens of billions" in 2028 (Optimus, AI compute, Cybercab, Terafab)

How I read it: on paper a capex cut plus positive FCF is the "good" outcome. The tape seems to read it as supply-constrained growth and a slower investment cycle, which is awkward for a stock priced on the AI and robotics story. Also note the $30bn borrowing capacity they lined up for later capex.

For scalpers: yesterday's +3.4% run into the print means a lot of that move could get given back. I'd watch the prior close at ~$386.5 as resistance and the AH low as the first reference. Battery headlines could also move QS (+9% AH on its data-centre battery line) and the LFP suppliers in sympathy.

Is anyone fading the open on TSLA, or is the capex cut actually a reason to buy the dip? How much does battery supply matter for you versus the robotaxi narrative?
