One of the few clean beats this morning. Capital One reported after the close yesterday and is up around 3–3.5% pre-market.
The numbers
- Net income $3.5bn, GAAP EPS $5.61 (vs $4.83 a year ago). Adj EPS $6.69, roughly 22% above consensus
- Net interest margin 8.41%, up 40bp from Q2 (8.01%) on higher card loan yields
- Lower provisions, including a $225M loan-loss reserve release
The thing to be careful with: part of the beat comes from the reserve release and lower provisions. That's a credit-cycle call by management, not pure operating growth. If you're trading this as a "consumer is fine" signal, also watch what card peers like SYF and AXP do today and how the call describes delinquencies and charge-off trends.
For the tape: COF tends to trade with decent liquidity and respects the pre-market high/low fairly well. If it holds above the pre-market range after the first 15–30 minutes, it can grind. If the reserve-release angle gets picked apart on the call, the gap can fade.

Do you discount beats that lean on reserve releases, or does the market just not care on day one? Anyone pairing COF against SYF today?
COF +3%: Capital One Q3 adj EPS $6.69 (~22% beat), NIM up 40bp to 8.41%, $225M reserve release
