This one is an index-plumbing story, not an earnings one, and it hit hard. MSCI launched a consultation (announced 15 Oct US time) proposing to move Indonesia from Emerging Market to Standalone Market status. That skips frontier entirely; MSCI says a frontier downgrade "would not properly recognise the depth of the market problems".
What happened:
- The Jakarta Composite fell 8% at the open, triggering a trading halt, and was down about 11.1% after the restart, the worst day since early 1998 and the lowest level since 2020 (CNA/AFP)
- MSCI cites persistent opacity in shareholding structures, suspected coordinated trading and a lack of meaningful enforcement, despite announced reforms (1%+ holder disclosure, a 15% minimum free-float roadmap)
- The existing freeze on Indonesian index changes, in place since January, stays on
- Per MSCI's own paper, the MSCI Indonesia index market cap is down ~55% since 1 Jan, and its weight in MSCI EM has dropped from 1.16% to 0.43%
- Feedback runs to 30 April 2027, decision by 30 June 2027. IDX stresses it's a consultation, not a final decision
- In US hours, the PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia ADR (TLK) was down ~12.6% at midday, near the top of the losers' list
Why scalpers should care: standalone status means passive EM money eventually has to leave, and analysts are floating up to ~$19B of potential outflows. That's a long, slow overhang, but the first few sessions tend to be gap-and-flush, then dead-cat bounces as active funds argue it's priced in. EIDO and TLK are thin compared with the usual US tape, so spreads widen fast. I'd want tight size and pre-planned exits, not market orders into the open.

Anyone trading EIDO/TLK on this, or is the liquidity too thin to be worth it? And do you see the first bounce as a fade, given there are eight months of consultation overhang?
