MU / SNDK / STX / WDC lower: China's CXMT puts a year-end date on a 4F² DDR5 server RDIMM — DRAM ETF ~-4%

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

Memory is the weak spot on Monday's tape. CXMT (ChangXin, China's biggest DRAM maker) president Cao Kanyu said at an industry event in Shanghai that the company will introduce a DDR5 registered DIMM for servers built on a 4F² memory cell before the end of 2026. Midday per CNBC: MU and STX roughly -3%, WDC down 2%+, SNDK -5%+, Roundhill Memory ETF (DRAM) about -4%. Other write-ups had MU closer to -4–5% at the lows and SK hynix / Samsung down ~4% in Seoul.

What was actually said:
- 4F² cuts cell area by about a third versus the 6F² layout used today; CXMT talks up 30–50% density gains, using a vertical surrounding-gate transistor.
- Samsung's 4F² roadmap points to production around 2028, so the headline reads as "China ~2 years early".
- But it is a target, not a product: no capacity, speed or sampling details, and server RDIMMs still have to clear long qualification cycles before volume sales to hyperscalers.

Why it matters for the tape:
- Memory has been one of the most crowded AI trades this year, so a competitive headline is an easy excuse to take profit — and it's dragging semis broadly (SOX names, MRVL, AMD softer too).
- CPI on Wednesday and earnings season starting tomorrow keep the dip-buyers cautious.

How I'd approach it:
- I'd treat MU/SNDK as a sentiment flush, not a fundamental reset, unless follow-up reporting shows real samples or customer qualification.
- Levels to watch are Friday's lows and the opening range; a reclaim of VWAP into the close would tell you the "year-end target" story is being faded.

Anyone buying the memory dip today, or waiting for proof CXMT can actually ship this? Does a China roadmap headline change how you size MU into the next print?
