LITE ~+6%: CEO says optical parts "completely sold out" through early 2029 — COHR/AAOI bid after Thursday's rout

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

The optics names are leading the AI rebound this morning, a day after getting hit hardest in the OpenAI-revenue selloff (COHR -9.6% and LITE -5.6% on Thursday).

The catalyst:
- Lumentum CEO Michael Hurlston told Bloomberg TV in Tokyo that the company's optoelectronic products are "completely sold out" through early 2029.
- He said Lumentum can't meet roughly 70% of demand for some products through next year, and expects about a 30% shortfall for others through 2028.
- The sold-out horizon has moved out about a year. Six months ago he was pointing to 2028.

The tape:
- LITE is up about 6% (last seen around $1,116), and COHR and AAOI are up around 5% each. POET joined in overnight.
- Keep the size of these moves in mind. LITE is up ~185% YTD and ~24% over the last 20 days, so a 6% move is a normal day for this name. Nvidia put $2B each into LITE and COHR earlier this year.

How I'd approach it:
- This is commentary in an interview, not a guide raise, so the next hard data point is the earnings print. Even so, "no end in sight" on supply is exactly what the bulls needed after yesterday's AI-capex scare.
- The key question is whether optics hold gains if the broader AI tape fades into the weekend. Thursday showed these names have the highest beta to any OpenAI or capex headline, in both directions.
- Spreads in LITE are wide in dollar terms at four-figure prices, so size accordingly and use the opening range rather than chasing extensions.

Is this a buy-the-rebound setup or just a Friday short-cover? And who's trading COHR/AAOI as the cheaper sympathy plays?
