Utilities don't usually make the top movers list, but two are there today. NorthWestern Energy (NWE) is up ~8.5–10% (around $75, near its 52-week high of ~$75.18) and Black Hills (BKH) is up ~8.5–10% (around $77.7). Both are rising on a weak tape.
The news (BKH 8-K / press release, Oct 6):
- Black Hills signed definitive agreements, effective Sept 30, to serve a planned Google data centre in Cheyenne, Wyoming, with terms through 2048. Service starts in late 2027 and ramps to peak load in 2030.
- It's up to 590 MW of grid service, plus Black Hills manages ~2.1 GW of third-party resources through a private microgrid.
- BKH plans to spend $1.8B in 2027–29 on 564 MW of its own gas generation through a non-regulated affiliate. Guidance is ~$150M net income in 2030 and ~$2.4B of unlevered FCF through 2048.
- Google carries the cost of serving the project, not retail customers, and has already put up $399M in refundable advances for long-lead equipment. That's the detail that should make regulators comfortable.
Why NWE is moving as much as BKH: the two are merging (the combined company is to be called Bright Horizon Energy). Montana's PSC decision on the merger is expected between mid-October and mid-November, so NWE holders are effectively buying into the Google contract too.
How I'd frame it:
- This is a re-rating story in normally slow names. Volume is well above normal, and after a gap like this, low-beta utilities often go sideways for days rather than trend.
- The risk to the move is the Montana merger ruling. A delay or tough conditions would hit NWE harder than BKH.
- It's another sign the hyperscaler power-deal theme is spreading from the big names (CEG/VST/TLN) to smaller regional utilities. Expect traders to hunt for the next small-cap utility with land and gas access.

Would you chase a utility after a +9% gap, or wait for a pullback toward the opening range? Which other small utilities do you think could be next for a hyperscaler deal?
