Brazil ADRs gap: EWZ ~+9% as Flávio Bolsonaro edges Lula in 1st round — PAGS/XP/STNE +12–16%; runoff Oct 25

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

Brazil's first round on Sunday came in the opposite way to most final polls: Flávio Bolsonaro (PL) finished ahead of President Lula, roughly 47% vs 45% of valid votes with almost everything counted. Nobody cleared 50%, so the two meet again in a runoff on Oct 25. The pre-vote base case was Lula ahead by a few points, so this is a positioning shock rather than a done deal.

The tape reacted overnight: EWZ was up ~9% in Sunday-evening/pre-market trading, a Tokyo-listed Brazil ETF opened ~+7.6%, and the real firmed. In US pre-market the fintech/broker ADRs are leading — XP ~+16%, PAGS ~+13–14%, STNE ~+12% (Benzinga/Stocktwits quotes). The market read is that a Flávio win means tighter fiscal policy and room for lower Selic rates, which helps rate-sensitive, domestic names and capital-markets plays (B3, XP).

Scalper read: big election gaps in ADRs often see the first 15–30 minutes decide whether pre-market buyers get paid or trapped — watch EWZ vs its pre-market high and how NU/MELI/ITUB/PBR follow. Keep size small: this is three weeks of runoff headline risk (polls, endorsements, debates), not one event.

Sources (public): O Globo TSE tally, Sun 4 Oct; VEJA on EWZ overnight; Benzinga pre-market movers, Mon 5 Oct.
