Post-Loss Checklist (Before Next Click)

Losses are information. Unprocessed losses are fuel.

I used to click into the next trade while the last one was still arguing with my nervous system. Checklist below is 60–90 seconds. Ego pretends that's too slow. Ego is wrong.

Checklist (what I actually mark)

Code: Select all

[ ] Am I flat / orders canceled?
[ ] Was this a rule-based loss or a breach?
[ ] If breach → breaker path (size zero / timer)
[ ] If rule-based → tag setup_id + mistake_code (or "none")
[ ] Body check: heart rate / urge to "get it back"
[ ] FOMO 3-breath if urge > 0
[ ] Next trade must be A-setup only
[ ] Still inside daily DD?
[ ] Screenshot marked if you will review later (optional)
Hard rule

No next click until the checklist is marked. Phone note is fine. Ego is not faster than 90 seconds — it only pretends to be.

Two outcomes

Path: Next action
Rule-based loss, calm, DD OK: A-setup only
Breach or tilt: timer / done for session per breaker

If you skip the checklist and win, you still failed the process. Journal that too — winning the wrong way trains the wrong reflex. I've logged "won wrong." Ugly line. Useful line.

Do you force A-setup only after any loss, or only after breaches?
Where do you mark the checklist — paper, phone, sheet?
What's your most common mistake_code after a loss streak?
Anyone timed the checklist and found it under 60s once it became habit?

Unprocessed losses are fuel. That's the line. I used to click into the next trade while the last one was still arguing with my nervous system.

Sixty to ninety seconds feels "too slow" to ego. Ego is wrong on stock desks too, especially when the book is still moving and the hand wants a redo.

Checklist I actually mark every time:

- Flat and orders canceled.
- Was this rule-based or a breach?
- Breach → breaker path (size zero / timer).
- Tag setup_id and mistake_code (or "none").
- Body check: heart rate and the get-it-back urge.
- FOMO 3-breath if urge > 0.
- Next trade A-setup only.
- Still inside daily DD.
- Optional screenshot if I'll review later.

If it's a breach, there is no "next A-setup" until the breaker path is done. That distinction matters more than the screenshot. Rule-based losses are tuition. Breaches are leaks.

Two quick examples so the difference is clear.

Rule-based: 09:47 ET, long at $27.35 on a written reclaim, invalidation $27.27, stopped at $27.26. Nine cents including a cent of slip. I tick flat, rule-based, setup_id "reclaim," mistake_code "none." Urge is low. I'm still well inside daily DD. Next trade is allowed, but only if an A-setup shows up. By 09:49 I'm back to watching.

Breach: same name, but I bought $27.42 on a marketable chase with no trigger and held it past invalidation hoping for a bounce, out at $27.18. That's a breach. Mistake_code "chase + held past stop." Size goes to zero and a 15-minute timer starts. No new trade until the timer ends and I've reread my plan. Nothing clever about it.

Failure modes:

- Labeling a breach as rule-based because the setup "was sort of there."
- Skipping the body check because I feel "fine." Fine after a loss usually means I haven't checked.
- Letting the checklist drift into a quick glance. It only works if I actually tick boxes.

When I skip trading after a loss entirely: second full loss of the session (2-loss walk-away), any breach within the first 15 minutes, or when I notice I'm already scanning for the next ticker before the checklist is finished.
