Prop Firm Scalping Gotchas

Prop rules can make a "working" scalp style illegal inside the account even when the chart looks fine.

I've seen people pass a challenge by violating the spirit of rules they didn't read carefully, then blow the funded account doing the same thing with more confidence. Chart wasn't the problem. Rulebook literacy was.

### Gotchas

1. **Consistency / news restrictions** — open-drive strategy may violate news windows.
2. **Min hold times / scalp definitions** — some programs discourage or forbid ultra-short holds.
3. **Max shares/contracts** that shrink after drawdown — your hotkey max must track the rule.
4. **Trailing DD vs static DD** — people blow accounts misunderstanding which meter matters. Classic.
5. **Prohibited instruments** lists update quietly.
6. **EA / copy / hotkey** policies — automation banned while "discretionary" allowed. Read twice.
7. **Payout illusions** — optimized for challenge metrics, not the live book you'll actually trade.
8. **Hedging / correlated positions** — your "hedge" may be prohibited.
9. **Weekend / AH flat rules** — leftovers get liquidated by policy, not by your thesis.

### Pre-challenge sheet

Code: Select all

[ ] Read rules PDF dated version ____
[ ] Map my setups → allowed / banned
[ ] Daily DD aligns with my circuit breaker (tighter wins)
[ ] Hold-time distribution from journal vs rules
[ ] News calendar process defined
[ ] I can flatten within rules on mobile
[ ] Hotkey max size ≤ firm max after buffer
[ ] I know trailing vs static DD formula cold
### Challenge vs funded mindset

During challenge, people loosen process to "hit the number." That trains the wrong reflex. Run the **same** breaker you will run funded. If you can't pass that way, you didn't have a portable process — you had a sprint.

Prop capital is **conditional leverage**. Trade the rulebook first. If your edge needs forbidden behavior, that edge isn't portable to that firm — change venue or change the edge.

Which gotcha almost got you (or did)?
Trailing vs static — do you know your firm's formula cold?
Hold-time distribution from your journal vs their rules — aligned?
Do you run the same breaker in challenge as you would funded?

Prop rules can make a working scalp style illegal inside the account even when the chart looks fine. The chart wasn't the problem. Rulebook literacy was.

Gotchas that keep showing up for equity scalpers:

- News/consistency windows versus open-drive. If the firm restricts trading around scheduled news or penalizes one oversized day, an open-drive style can break the rule on its best morning.
- Min-hold or "scalp" definitions. Some rulebooks define a minimum hold time or flag very short trades.
- Max shares that shrink after drawdown. Your hotkey max must track the live rule, not the number you had on day one.
- Trailing DD versus static DD confusion. A trailing drawdown can follow your intraday high, which changes how much room you really have after a green morning.
- Prohibited lists that update quietly.

A worked example of the trailing-DD trap, with made-up numbers for the arithmetic. Say the account has a $1,000 trailing drawdown measured from the peak balance. At 09:48 ET I'm up $400 on the day after two clean scalps. If the trail follows intraday peak, my floor just moved up $400 too. Now a normal 10-cent stop on 1,000 shares is $100, plus a cent or two of slip, and four of those in a row gives back the $400. I'm back at my starting balance with about $600 of room left, not the $1,000 I'd assume from a flat day. My home-account brain says "I'm green, I've got cushion." The firm's meter says the cushion moved with me.

Practical habit: before a challenge or funded period, rewrite your hotkey map and daily breaker to the firm's meters, not your home account meters. Concretely:

1. Set hotkey share presets at or below the current max-shares rule.
2. Set my own daily breaker inside the firm's limit, not equal to it.
3. Write the firm's drawdown type (trailing or static) at the top of my premarket sheet.
4. Check the prohibited list at 09:15 ET.

Failure modes: trusting a summary from chat instead of the actual rulebook; assuming the same firm uses the same rules across account types; resizing up after a green week without checking whether max shares changed.

When to skip the challenge entirely: if your core setup is structurally at odds with a rule (for example, it depends on the exact window the firm restricts), don't twist the style to fit. Pick a different program or keep trading your own account.

Passing by violating the spirit of a rule you didn't read carefully is how people blow the funded account with more confidence.
