Evening from London. This one is mostly a European story, but it's worth having on the radar if you trade US index futures, EUR/USD or ADRs.
What happened
- France's benchmark 10-year OAT yield briefly went above 5% this morning (just before 11:30 Paris) for the first time since 2002, before slipping back to just under 5%. The OAT–Bund spread is drifting back toward the ~160bp 15-year high from early October
- Background: violent cost-of-living protests and weekend rioting and looting, plus a divided parliament haggling over the 2027 budget. PM Lecornu is targeting about €54bn of spending cuts. FinMin Lescure said the government will use Article 49.3 to force the budget through if it has to
- Carrefour cut its FY outlook and flagged €80–200M of operating-income hit from the unrest. The stock fell around 13–15%, heading for its worst day on record, and about €1.7bn of market cap was gone by mid-morning. JPMorgan pointed out that Carrefour didn't even cut guidance during the 2018–19 Gilets Jaunes protests, and said the weakness looks broader, with soft volumes in France, Spain and Brazil
Risk angle for us: so far it's contained. STOXX 600 is still up about 0.8% and US indices are green, while the US 10y is around 5.10%, slightly lower on the day. EUR/USD is only about 0.1% softer near 1.1226. The thing to watch is contagion: if OAT stays above 5% and the spread widens, European banks (BNP, SocGen) and the euro usually take the hit first, and that can bleed into risk-off in US futures overnight. Spring 2027 presidential election risk keeps this as a slow-burning theme, not a one-day story.

Does anyone here actually adjust size on US index scalps when European sovereign spreads blow out? Which do you watch as the early warning: OAT–Bund, EUR/USD or the French banks?
