Microstructure Traps After the Open

The first hour is where retail plans meet auction mechanics. These traps repeat because humans repeat. Including me.
### Trap list (the ones that keep paying themselves)
1. **Opening range break on thin volume** that fails when real size arrives.
2. **False reclaim of VWAP** — one print above, persistent selling underneath.
3. **Widened spread + marketable FOMO** — you pay the tax, then the move stalls.
4. **News headline lag** — chart already repriced; you buy the leftover narrative.
5. **Stop cascade into empty book** — looks like trend, is vacuum; snapback eats late entries.
6. **Peer magnet** — stock follows a leader for 3 minutes, then decouples while you're still narrating correlation.
7. **Working order amnesia** — leave a limit from premarket logic into a new regime. Done that. Hated that.
### Countermeasures mapped
| Trap | Counter |
|------|---------|
| Thin OR break | require hold/retest or volume condition |
| False VWAP reclaim | wait for acceptance (time or consecutive holds) |
| Spread FOMO | max slip rule → auto flatten if exceeded |
| Headline lag | primary source time vs chart time check |
| Vacuum spike | no chase beyond X cents from trigger |
| Peer magnet | trade the name's level, not the story |
| Order amnesia | cancel-all habit at regime change |
### Session tag
Mark mornings `TRAP_HEAVY` vs `CLEAN` in the journal. If your PnL only works on clean days, size on trap-heavy days should already be smaller **before** the first click. First-15 rules exist because microstructure is hostile to improvisation.
Which trap gets you most often lately?
Do you tag TRAP_HEAVY mornings before sizing, or only after the damage?
Max chase beyond trigger — what's your number?
Cancel-all on regime change — automatic habit yet, or still aspirational?
