Biggest asset manager’s research arm just took a clear risk-off step on the US equity sleeve.
Per Reuters / Yahoo Finance write-ups of the BlackRock Investment Institute (BII) weekly note (Boivin / Rieder / Wei Li, dated 12 Oct, circulating hard today):
- US stocks: overweight → Neutral (ends a long-held overweight).
- Short-term Treasuries: upgraded to overweight; longer Treasuries to Neutral.
- Framing: take profits on equities “to manage potential volatility around the AI buildout”, while locking in income after 10y yields hit ~24-year highs above ~5.3%.
- Importantly for the tape: they still prefer AI *inside* US equities — this is portfolio risk management, not an AI-fundamentals dump.
Why it matters into Wed CPI / ASML week: when BLK’s research desk funds a Treasury upgrade by closing the equity OW, it tends to show up as softer risk appetite outside the mega-cap AI cohort. Kobeissi Letter stats cited alongside the note: ~84% of S&P names ≥10% off ATH; ~59% ≥20% off.

Does this change how you size SPY/QQQ overnight into CPI, or is it just confirmation of the “narrow leadership” tape we’ve already been trading?
