AVGO/semis heavy: Hock Tan calls many AI investors "casino gamblers", says capital may be the next AI limit

One for the semis watchlist today. Broadcom CEO Hock Tan spoke at a conference in Singapore on Monday, and his comments are being blamed (together with the CXMT memory-chip story) for part of the overnight chip sell-off in Asia.

What he said, as reported:
- Many investors in the AI/chip theme "have no clue what they are investing in", set extreme expectations, and end up behaving like they're in a casino.
- He questioned whether enterprises are getting real returns on AI yet. His analogy: spending tokens at an arcade and learning nothing.
- OpenAI reaching about $50B annualised revenue shows the potential, but it's still losing money on training, so it doesn't prove long-term profitability.
- He warned that a shortage of capital, not chips or power, could become the next limit on AI growth.

Market context:
- KOSPI fell more than 5% (SK hynix and Samsung hit hard) and the Nikkei was down about 3%. Most of the Korea move was already discussed in this morning's KOSPI thread, but this is the US-listed angle.
- AVGO was only down about 0.75% pre-market around $352. NVDA was about -0.6% and MRVL about -2.5%, so far a much milder reaction in the US than in Asia.
- Worth noting: Broadcom itself stays bullish on its own AI revenue. This reads more like a warning about the lab and investor side than about Broadcom's order book.

How I'd trade it: headline-driven pressure on a CEO quote tends to fade unless sell-side notes or more AI-funding headlines pile on. I'd watch whether AVGO and SMH hold their pre-market lows after the first 30 minutes. If they do, the dip-buyers are probably in control again. If they lose them, memory names (MU, SNDK) are likely to lead the move lower.

Do you treat a CEO "sentiment" quote like this as a real catalyst, or as a dip to buy? And are you trading AVGO directly or through SMH/SOXX?
