ASTS ~-4% pre-mkt: Piper Sandler cuts to Neutral, PT $54 from $98 — SpaceX's direct-to-cell push clouds the 2026–27 laun

Broker call worth knowing about if ASTS is on your list today. Piper Sandler has downgraded AST SpaceMobile to Neutral from Overweight and cut its target to $54 from $98. The stock was showing around -4% in early pre-market.
Piper's reasoning, as reported by Investing.com:
- Lower conviction on how fast AST can get satellites up in 2026–2027.
- SpaceX is getting more aggressive in direct-to-cell, with last week's roughly $8B mobile spectrum purchase as the evidence.
- Piper's concern is that SpaceX could in theory limit launch availability for partners like AST, undercut operator pricing, or push its own devices.
- They're still constructive on the longer term (post-2027) and think SpaceX's push could actually raise carrier demand for AST's service.
Context:
- The stock was around $51.46 when the note came out. That's about 62% below its 52-week high of $133.86 and down roughly 18% over the past week.
- Street targets are very spread out (roughly $42.50 to $108), and B. Riley also moved to Neutral recently. Expect two-way flows, not a one-way drift.
- This ties into the same SpaceX spectrum story that moved the tower names last week (separate thread in Pre-Market Prep).
How I'd approach it: a downgrade gap in a high-beta, retail-heavy name tends to either flush early and squeeze, or bleed all day. I'd watch whether it holds the pre-market low once real volume shows up after 14:30 London, and keep size small given the spreads.

Do you trade ASTS on broker-note days, or is it too wild intraday? And does the "SpaceX could squeeze launch access" argument hold up for you?
