8:30 ET release days: calendar triage and my first-trade delay

On mornings with a major 08:30 ET US economic release, such as CPI, the jobs report, PPI or retail sales, the pre-market tape isn't the same animal as on a quiet morning. I don't try to trade the release. What I do is triage the calendar the night before and set a delay on my first trade.
## Calendar triage (the evening before)
- List every scheduled release for the next day, with ET times, from an economic calendar I trust.
- Tag each one HIGH (CPI, jobs, FOMC days), MEDIUM (PPI, retail sales, and so on), or LOW. The tags are my own judgment about what tends to move index futures, and I review them quarterly.
- Note any 10:00 ET releases too. They can hit right in the middle of a trade.
## Rails
- HIGH at 08:30: no trades before 09:45 ET. The watchlist is rebuilt from scratch between 08:35 and 09:20 ET, because pre-release gappers may no longer be relevant.
- MEDIUM at 08:30: normal open, but half size until 09:45 ET.
- Any 10:00 ET release: no new entries from 09:57 to 10:03 ET, and open trades get their stops checked at 09:55.
- On HIGH days, the spread caps on my watchlist are written at 1.5 times normal for the first half hour, and names that exceed even that are skipped.
## Worked example (illustrative)
CPI morning. At 08:30 ET index futures jump, fall back and then drift. The $31 name I had on my list at 08:00 was gapping on sector news. By 08:45 it has lost its gap and is back to flat. It comes off the list.
A $74 name that gapped up after the release holds up through the premarket. At 09:46 ET, after my delay, it breaks its opening range high at 74.60. I buy 100 (normal would be 200 for this bucket, but I cut early trades on HIGH days) at 74.63 with a stop at 74.45, an 18-cent stop. At 09:55 ET it's at 74.90. I sell half at 74.88 for 25 cents and trail the rest to 74.76 at 10:02 ET for 13 cents.
## Failure modes
- Checking the calendar at 08:25 ET instead of the night before.
- Trading a pre-release watchlist after the release changed the picture.
- Forgetting the 10:00 ET release and holding a full position straight through it.
## When to skip
- If the release reaction is still swinging index futures back and forth at 09:40 ET, my delay extends to 10:15.
- FOMC days get their own card. This one is only about the mornings.
