Hotkey Doctrine for Discrete Size / Cancel / Flatten

Post by NYC88 »

Hotkeys are either a surgical kit or a suicide vest. Doctrine first.

I fat-fingered a size-up next to flatten once in my thirties. Account survived. Ego didn't for a week. Map changed that afternoon.

Principles

1. No hotkey places an order without a defined size preset. Ambiguous size = eventual fat-finger. Not maybe. Eventually.
2. Cancel All and Flatten are isolated — not adjacent to Buy/Sell if you can help it.
3. Modifier for Flatten (Ctrl+Alt+F or similar) if the platform allows. Accidental flat hurts. Accidental reverse hurts more.
4. Same layout on VPS and home. Muscle memory is part of latency.
5. Disable charting-browser keybinds when focus fights your broker binds. TradingView vs platform keybind wars are a classic own-goal.

Suggested minimal map (adapt — don't worship)

Code: Select all

F1 Size preset A (small)
F2 Size preset B (normal)
F3 Size preset C (max allowed by daily risk)
F5 Buy bid / hit (define exactly in platform terms)
F6 Sell ask / lift
F8 Cancel all
Ctrl+Alt+F Flatten
Ctrl+Alt+S Kill hotkeys / lock (if available)
Validation drill

Paper account. Twenty random cancel drills. Ten flatten drills with a position open. Zero accidental opposite-side orders — or you redesign the map. No exceptions for "I was tired."

Post your map without account identifiers. If your platform can't bind Flatten safely, reduce size until it can. Software limits are risk limits. I've sat people down and said that when they wanted a bigger hotkey instead of a safer one.

What's your flatten bind, and is it chorded or a single key?
Anyone share a map that survived a year without a fat-finger incident?
Do you keep identical binds on home and VPS, or did drift creep in?
Platform limitation that forced you to change doctrine — what was it?

Principles I won't bend on a stock desk: no order hotkey without a defined size preset — ambiguous size is eventual fat-finger, not maybe; Cancel All and Flatten isolated from Buy/Sell when the platform allows; modifier for Flatten (Ctrl+Alt+F style) so accidental flat hurts less than accidental reverse; identical layout on VPS and home because muscle memory is part of latency; disable charting-browser keybinds that fight the broker (TradingView vs platform wars are a classic own-goal).

Discrete size presets matter more than people admit when you're trading share size into a moving book. Test the map on a Sunday, not during a winner.
