RAM Hog Guide: Kill What Steals Your Fill Window

At the open, Chrome with 40 tabs + Discord + a stream + broker + TradingView is how you discover garbage collection pauses exist. Usually right when you needed a clean cancel.

I've watched a "fast" laptop hitch for half a second because cloud backup decided 09:30 was a great time to sync vacation photos. Half a second is a lifetime if you're in something thin.

Typical offenders on a desktop

Browser sessions with WebGL charts and social feeds. Electron apps (Discord, Slack, desktop "AI copilots"). Cloud backup kicking in at the open. Windows Search indexer. Pending Update reboot. Multiple broker platforms "just in case."

Operating rules I actually run

1. Trading user profile separate from browsing. Sounds fussy. Saves sessions.
2. Hard cap: if RAM is over ~70% before 09:25 ET, close things until it isn't. No negotiating with yourself.
3. Disable startup junk — Task Manager → Startup apps. Do it Sunday, not while SPY is mid-drive.
4. One charting host live. Research later.
5. VPS gets the same rules. Remote does not mean infinite.

Quick Windows triage

Code: Select all

Task Manager → Processes
Sort by Memory / CPU
End: browsers not needed, launchers, game overlays, "assistant" junk
Check: Win Update state (no pending reboot on Monday open)
Quick Linux triage

Code: Select all

free -h
ps aux --sort=-%mem | head -n 20
# kill by design, not by panic
Rule of thumb

If your platform hitch and your RAM graph hitch at the same second, it's not manipulation. It's your box. I've said that to people who did not want to hear it. They heard it anyway after the third unexplained slip.
