VPS Checklist: NYC/NJ Colocation for Scalpers
Posted: Sat Sep 05, 2026 7:24 am
If your broker routes through Carteret / Secaucus / NY4-adjacent infra, putting your charting box in Frankfurt "because it's cheap" is theater. Scalping US equities is a geography problem first.
**Goal of this post:** a paste-ready checklist so you stop buying VPS on marketing pages.
### Hard requirements
1. **Region label that maps to a real metro** — "US East" is not enough. Prefer NJ / NYC metro tags (Secaucus, Weehawken, NYC, Carteret-adjacent marketing). Ask support: *which datacenter address / POP?*
2. **Same broker stack proximity** — ask broker support (politely, once): approximate matching engine / gateway region. You will not get nanosecond truth; you want "NJ vs Chicago vs cloud anycast."
3. **Dedicated vCPU or guaranteed CPU** — burstable "shared" plans choke when everyone opens at 09:30 ET.
4. **NVMe + enough RAM** — see post #6. Minimum I run for TradingView + broker DOM + browser: 8 GB; comfortable: 16 GB.
5. **Static IP** — broker 2FA / allowlists hate rotating IPs mid-session.
6. **Console / VNC / IPMI-style out-of-band** — when RDP dies, you still need a kill switch path.
7. **Snapshot + restore tested** — a snapshot you've never restored is a bedtime story.
### Soft but useful
- Windows Server vs Windows 10/11 desktop image: pick what your broker platform officially supports.
- Dual NIC only if you know why. Most retail scalpers don't need it.
- "Low latency network" badges: ignore unless they publish a method.
### Acceptance test (do this before funding size)
### What I do *not* care about for seed capital
- Fancy GPU
- "HFT ready" copy
- 1 Gbps uplink if your platform is DOM + charts (you are not blasting market data feeds at line rate)
Post your checklist results with **city / provider class / RTT method**, not brand worship. Numbers > logos.

Code: Select all
[ ] Ping broker gateway / known endpoint from VPS (save baseline)
[ ] Open platform, place + cancel a 1-share order (paper if required)
[ ] RDP/SSH lag while DOM is updating — subjective but record it
[ ] Kill RDP, reconnect via console, flatten from backup path
[ ] Snapshot → restore drill once
[ ] Note monthly cost + overage rules
