VPS Checklist: NYC/NJ Colocation for Scalpers

Post by NYC88 »

If your broker routes through Carteret / Secaucus / NY4-adjacent infra, putting your charting box in Frankfurt "because it's cheap" is theater. Scalping US equities is a geography problem first.

**Goal of this post:** a paste-ready checklist so you stop buying VPS on marketing pages.

### Hard requirements

1. **Region label that maps to a real metro** — "US East" is not enough. Prefer NJ / NYC metro tags (Secaucus, Weehawken, NYC, Carteret-adjacent marketing). Ask support: *which datacenter address / POP?*
2. **Same broker stack proximity** — ask broker support (politely, once): approximate matching engine / gateway region. You will not get nanosecond truth; you want "NJ vs Chicago vs cloud anycast."
3. **Dedicated vCPU or guaranteed CPU** — burstable "shared" plans choke when everyone opens at 09:30 ET.
4. **NVMe + enough RAM** — see post #6. Minimum I run for TradingView + broker DOM + browser: 8 GB; comfortable: 16 GB.
5. **Static IP** — broker 2FA / allowlists hate rotating IPs mid-session.
6. **Console / VNC / IPMI-style out-of-band** — when RDP dies, you still need a kill switch path.
7. **Snapshot + restore tested** — a snapshot you've never restored is a bedtime story.

### Soft but useful

- Windows Server vs Windows 10/11 desktop image: pick what your broker platform officially supports.
- Dual NIC only if you know why. Most retail scalpers don't need it.
- "Low latency network" badges: ignore unless they publish a method.

### Acceptance test (do this before funding size)

Code: Select all

[ ] Ping broker gateway / known endpoint from VPS (save baseline)
[ ] Open platform, place + cancel a 1-share order (paper if required)
[ ] RDP/SSH lag while DOM is updating — subjective but record it
[ ] Kill RDP, reconnect via console, flatten from backup path
[ ] Snapshot → restore drill once
[ ] Note monthly cost + overage rules
### What I do *not* care about for seed capital

- Fancy GPU
- "HFT ready" copy
- 1 Gbps uplink if your platform is DOM + charts (you are not blasting market data feeds at line rate)

Post your checklist results with **city / provider class / RTT method**, not brand worship. Numbers > logos.

On **VPS Checklist: NYC/NJ Colocation for Scalpers**, the desk standard stays practical. VPS for scalpers is not a logo on a landing page. For liquid US names, the question is whether NYC/NJ-adjacent infrastructure reduces variance in platform responsiveness and failover options — and whether you can operate it without turning into a part-time sysadmin during CPI.

Replying in-thread with operable constraints — not forum combat. If these rails disagree with your framing, treat it as a checklist offer.

Infrastructure is risk management. ISP, VPS, NTP, flatten hotkeys, and update quarantine only count when drilled and dated.

## Rails that stay on the sheet
- VPS is measured path, not a landing-page logo.
- Trial under open load.
- Invalidation written in cents or an auditable structure break before entry.

## Framework: colo fantasy vs desk reality
You do not need mythic latency to scalp SPY/QQQ cousins competently. You need fewer disconnect surprises, a clean session, and a flatten path. If a VPS makes those better, it earns its keep. If it adds password theater and untested failover, it is a new risk.
## When to skip
Skipping is a first-class decision — even when the chart still looks persuasive:
- Checklist incomplete at 09:20 ET — observe or one pre-written A+ only.
- Live spread outside max for that symbol and session bucket.
- Index violently disagrees with a single-name thesis and no reduced-size RS plan is on the sheet.
- Platform, hotkeys, locate, or flatten path unverified after reconnect/update.
- Daily loss, PDT slot, or prop buffer tripwire already touched.
- News/FOMC/CPI window where the size-cut card says stand down.

## Closing
For **VPS Checklist: NYC/NJ Colocation for Scalpers**, keep operable boredom: written rails, measured cents, index context when relevant, and a skip that needs no apology. Process quality beats ticket volume.

Diagram still attached as the visual checklist. Status remains awaiting approval; nothing here is a live post.
## Worked example — VPS logo shopping
Picks cheapest 'NYC' VPS; actually far region; chart freeze on open. Checklist: region, routing, data vendor path, session persistence, failover, support hours overlapping RTH.

I keep examples in cents and clock time so Sunday review can tag the behavior — not rewrite it as a mood.

## Failure modes
- Ignoring the rails above on **VPS Checklist: NYC/NJ Colocation for Scalpers** and substituting confidence.
- Adding size after adverse selection because the story still feels right.
- Paying open microstructure tax that midday memory never modeled.
