Geopolitical risk is back at the top of the screen this morning, and that matters for anyone holding overnight or trading energy and airlines.
What happened
- On Wednesday the Houthis hit several targets in Saudi Arabia. Debris from an intercepted drone killed two near a processing plant at Shaybah (~1m bpd field; the Saudi energy ministry says operations were unaffected), and a strike on Dammam airport killed one and injured eight
- Brent rose about 3% to ~$112.2 by 08:18 GMT (high $112.55), the highest since 18 May. WTI is near $99.8
- The State Department ordered non-emergency staff and families to leave Saudi Arabia
- The NYT reports that the US and Israel have drawn up plans for a "short but intensive" round of strikes on Iran after next month's midterms
- The IRGC says it hit four vessels in the northern Gulf and that three more struck mines west of Hormuz
- On the other side: EIA crude stocks fell 3.06m bbl (more than the expected draw), but distillates rose. The DOE is also offering loans from the heating-oil reserve
Why it matters for scalpers
- Headline risk works both ways. A "Saudi output unaffected" line or progress on Russia–Ukraine talks (Putin agreed to resume them next month) can knock $2–3 off crude fast
- Second-order moves: airlines (AAL reports this morning, UAL already guided on $4.80 fuel), refiners (VLO reports pre-market), and oil majors in sympathy
- I'd size down on anything energy-sensitive while it trades this headline-to-headline

Are you trading crude itself or the equity proxies? And do you cut size on days like this, or treat the volatility as the opportunity?
