SMCI +16% after hours: preliminary Q1 revenue $18.5–19.5bn vs a $14.5–15.5bn guide, gross margin also above range. DELL

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

Super Micro put out a surprise preliminary update after the close yesterday, and the stock jumped ~15–16% after hours to about $37.5 (from a ~$32.5 close).

What they said (for the September quarter, fiscal Q1'27)
- Revenue estimated at $18.5–19.5bn vs guidance of $14.5–15.5bn. That's roughly $4bn above the top of the range, put down to AI platform demand
- Gross margin estimated at 12.0–12.5% vs guidance of 10.4–10.8%, put down to customer and product mix
- Figures are unaudited and subject to revision. The full report and call are set for 3 November, 5pm ET

Read-across: DELL traded ~+6% after hours (around $490) and HPE was also up in sympathy, per MarketWatch. The 2x SMCI ETFs (SMCL, SMCX) were up 30%+ after hours, so expect heavy leveraged-product flow around the open.

My read: a pre-announcement this big is mostly a volume story: GPU rack shipments landing in the quarter. The margin line matters more. SMCI has spent the last two years explaining why margins keep shrinking, so a beat on margin, not just revenue, is what could make this stick past day one. The caution is the obvious one with this name: these are preliminary numbers, the history includes accounting and filing issues, and the details (customer concentration, cash flow, inventory) only come on 3 November.

For the tape: gap-ups this size in a crowded retail name tend to be volatile in the first 15 minutes. I'd let the opening range form and trade the break or the failure, not chase pre-market prints. The after-hours high is the first level to watch.

Anyone trading DELL as the cleaner way to play this instead of SMCI itself? And how much do you trust a preliminary number from this company before the full 10-Q?
