T ~-7.5%, VZ/TMUS ~-6.6% AH: SpaceX buys Grain's nationwide 800 MHz spectrum for Starlink Mobile

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

The three big US carriers closed green on Thursday and then gave it all back and more after hours.

What happened:
- Grain Management agreed to sell its entire nationwide 800 MHz portfolio to SpaceX (SPCX). SpaceX describes it as up to 14 MHz of paired low-band spectrum that adds an indoor coverage layer to Starlink Mobile, with its 2 GHz spectrum handling capacity. Its pitch is to become a "major mobile carrier" in the US.
- No price was disclosed. The deal needs FCC approval, and there's no retail pricing or launch date yet.
- One awkward detail: Grain bought this spectrum from T-Mobile in August.
- Context: the FCC authorized up to 15,000 SpaceX direct-to-device satellites on Oct 6, and T/VZ/TMUS announced their own satellite JV on Oct 1.

AH quotes (around 5:25pm ET, per Investing.com data):
- T $24.87 to ~$23.00 (-7.5%)
- VZ $46.35 to ~$43.28 (-6.6%)
- TMUS $171.31 to ~$159.93 (-6.6%)

How I'd trade it at the open:
- These are low-beta, heavily owned dividend names. A 6–7% gap down is a big move for them, so the open will draw value buyers and income funds as well as momentum shorts.
- The bear case is years away and depends on regulation and execution. That's a classic recipe for a gap that gets partly filled. I'd want to see whether the first 15-minute low holds before trying a long, and I'm not shorting into a flush.
- If the gap extends with volume and VWAP stays overhead into 10:30, the market is pricing real churn and pricing risk. Respect that.
- Tower names (AMT, CCI, SBAC) could trade in sympathy. Watch SPCX too, but it reacts to plenty of other things.

Gap-fill long or fade any bounce, and which of the three would you pick? Does anyone think Starlink Mobile actually reaches pricing power within two or three years?
