Morning from London. Futures are bid after Thursday's chip flush: S&P ~+0.3%, Nasdaq 100 ~+0.4–0.5% in the Asia session.
Where we left it Thursday:
- S&P -0.47% to ~7,765, Nasdaq -1.25% to ~27,193, Dow +0.10%. Second straight down day from Tuesday's record.
- The SOX lost 3.39%. The trigger was an FT report around midday that OpenAI told investors its annualized revenue was approaching ~$50B at end-September, about $20B below the ~$70B number doing the rounds last month. COHR -9.6%, ARM ~-6.5%, ORCL ~-5.5%, MU -4.8%, AVGO -4.4%, AMD -3.9%, NVDA -2.9%.
- Energy (+~3%) and staples (+~2%) were the only real bid. Brent settled near $104 on the Iran tanker headlines and Isaias shut-ins.
- The 10y faded from the 5.35% area to ~5.23% after a decent 30y auction. Waller said he expects more hikes if the data come in as expected.
Overnight:
- Bloomberg reports OpenAI expects to reach or exceed $70B annualized revenue by year-end, mostly on enterprise growth. That's the reason for the Nasdaq bounce. It's a forward target, not a correction of the FT's September figure, so the two stories don't really cancel out.
- Brent eased to ~$103 after Trump said the US won't attack Iran before the November midterms.
- AH: telecoms got hit on SpaceX's 800 MHz spectrum deal (T ~-7.5%, VZ/TMUS ~-6.6%), and HUM jumped ~13% on the 2027 Medicare Star ratings. Separate threads on both.
Today (ET):
- Pre-mkt: DAL Q3 (call 10:00). Street is anywhere from ~$1.73 to ~$1.96 EPS depending on the source, and Q4 fuel assumptions matter more than the quarter. PGR also reports.
- 9:30 Schmid (KC Fed), 10:00 UMich prelim (consensus ~47.6 vs 48.1; watch the inflation expectations lines), 4:00pm Collins.
How I'm approaching it:
- Chips are the tell. If SMH can't hold the overnight bounce through the first 30 minutes, the FT story is still being digested. A gap-and-fade in NVDA/AVGO/MU would be my main short idea.
- DAL sets the tone for airlines (UAL, AAL, ALK) with crude still above $100.
- Friday before earnings season: expect some de-risking into the close, and keep size modest.

Do you buy the chip bounce or wait for it to fail? And is anyone trading DAL off the print, or just the airline sympathy names?
Fri prep 9 Oct: SOX -3.4% on FT OpenAI revenue gap, futures bounce on $70B target — DAL/PGR pre-mkt, UMich 10am
