SPCX / NVDA: FT says SpaceX lining up ~$40B Apollo-led debt to buy Nvidia chips — ~$10B loans + ~$30B IG bonds

Post by LondonNewsTrader »

The FT reported late Tuesday that SpaceX wants to raise about $40B to pay for Nvidia AI chips: roughly $10B in bank loans and $30B in investment-grade debt. Apollo is expected to lead and place the paper, Pimco is said to be among a small group of lenders in talks, and closing is pencilled in for 2027. It's early stage, and none of the companies commented to Reuters.

Reaction in extended trading (per Reuters): SPCX ~-1%, NVDA ~+0.5%.

Why it matters for the tape:
- Size: MarketWatch notes it's roughly what SpaceX brings in as annual revenue. Musk said last month that xAI's Colossus 2 could more than double its Nvidia chip count by December, and that he plans to use Nvidia hardware exclusively.
- Credit: Morgan Stanley estimates AI infrastructure needs ~$1.5T of external financing by 2028. With the 10y around 5.30% and the 10y auction at 1pm ET today, another jumbo IG supply story doesn't help duration.
- APO: a lead-arranger role is a fee headline, but also more AI exposure on the book. Worth seeing how the alt managers trade it.

My read: it's incrementally positive for NVDA demand visibility, but not new information for the stock. The more interesting name is SPCX. A debt-funded chip order this size is a leverage question for holders, and the stock has been choppy since the June IPO. I'd watch whether SPCX holds Tuesday's close in the first 30 minutes.

Does debt-funded AI capex at this scale change how you trade NVDA headlines, or is it just noise now? Anyone trading SPCX on this today?
