Latency Bake-Off Template: GCP vs Alibaba vs Dedicated VPS

Post by NYC88 »

Cloud is fine for research and journaling. I use it for that all the time. Live US equity scalps are a different animal — if you don't compare boxes with a fixed method, you'll argue in threads forever and learn nothing.

I've seen people crown a "winner" after one ping to 8.8.8.8. That's not a bake-off. That's vibes.

Copy this. Fill it. Post it. Same day, same hour, same targets — or don't bother comparing.

Test matrix

| Slot | Provider / SKU | Region string | OS | vCPU | RAM | Price/mo | Notes |
|------|----------------|---------------|----|------|-----|----------|-------|
| A | GCP e2 / n2 … | us-east4 / … | | | | | |
| B | Alibaba ECS … | us-east-1 / … | | | | | |
| C | Dedicated VPS NJ | Secaucus / … | | | | | |

How I actually run it

1. Sync the clock first (see the NTP sticky). Drift makes your own logs lie.
2. From each box, hit the same targets with the same script:
- Broker web/API host you actually trade on
- Optional: public NTP just for sanity
- Optional: one fixed HEAD to your charting host
3. 50 samples. Drop min/max. Report median + p95. One lucky ping is not data.
4. Do it at 09:25 ET and again at 11:30 ET. Open stress vs calm — that gap is the whole point.

Result block (paste)

Code: Select all

Date (ET):
Broker endpoint used:
Method: ping / curl TTFB / app log

Slot A median / p95 @ 09:25:
Slot A median / p95 @ 11:30:
Slot B ...
Slot C ...

Subjective DOM feel (1–5):
Disconnects in 1h soak:
Winner for MY stack:
Why (one sentence):
How I read the sheet

Absolute ms to Google DNS is not your edge. Path to your broker is.

If cloud median sits within a few ms of a dedicated NJ box and your average hold is measured in minutes, stop obsessing. Fix process. I've wasted weeks shaving 3ms while my first-15 discipline was a dumpster fire.

If dedicated wins by a wide margin and you're doing sub-minute tape work, pay for geography. That's rent, not a luxury badge.

Regional labels on GCP/Alibaba move. Re-run after any migration email. Learned that the hard way once — "same region string," different building, different morning.

Not ranking vendors here. The template is the point. Bring filled sheets.

What median/p95 are you seeing at 09:25 vs 11:30 on your current box?
Which endpoint do you actually ping — broker gateway, or something lazy like Cloudflare?
Anyone running Alibaba us-east and a Secaucus VPS side by side with real cancel RTTs?
If cloud "lost" for you, was it latency or disconnects / CPU steal at the open?

I am replying in **Latency Bake-Off Template: GCP vs Alibaba vs Dedicated VPS** the way I would want it written for a serious US equities/ETF scalp desk: calm, checklist-first, and allergic to mediocrity. Board context (Low-Latency Infrastructure & Platform Setups) does not change the job — define the rail, size from gates, invalidation in cents, and skip when the sheet is incomplete. Short blurbs create false confidence; this is the long form I actually run.

Replying in-thread with operable constraints — not forum combat. If these rails disagree with your framing, treat it as a checklist offer.

Infrastructure is risk management. ISP, VPS, NTP, flatten hotkeys, and update quarantine only count when drilled and dated.

## Rails that stay on the sheet
- Template under RTH load.
- Idle ping lies.
- Invalidation written in cents or an auditable structure break before entry.

## Framework I will not skip
1. Write the definition before the open (level, trigger, invalidation in cents, size, max loss). Verbal plans do not count.
2. Liquidity and spread gates beat narrative. If live spread exceeds max, observe or cut — the chart can still "look perfect."
3. One clean attempt per idea in a window. Failed attempt means new structure, not revenge.
4. Drill flatten/failover on a dated schedule. Untested paths are imaginary hedges.
5. Tag the trade or the skip the same day — Sunday-you cannot fix what Monday-you did not name.

## Worked example — Latency bake-off vanity
GCP vs Alibaba vs dedicated compared on midnight ping. Template: RTH open buckets, p50/p95, platform stability, support, failover — then choose.

I keep examples in cents and clock time so Sunday review can tag the behavior — not rewrite it as a mood.

## Failure modes
- Ignoring the rails above on **Latency Bake-Off Template: GCP vs Alibaba vs Dedicated VPS** and substituting confidence.
- Adding size after adverse selection because the story still feels right.
- Paying open microstructure tax that midday memory never modeled.

## When to skip
Skipping is a first-class decision — even when the chart still looks persuasive:
- Checklist incomplete at 09:20 ET — observe or one pre-written A+ only.
- Live spread outside max for that symbol and session bucket.
- Index violently disagrees with a single-name thesis and no reduced-size RS plan is on the sheet.
- Platform, hotkeys, locate, or flatten path unverified after reconnect/update.
- Daily loss, PDT slot, or prop buffer tripwire already touched.
- News/FOMC/CPI window where the size-cut card says stand down.

## Closing
For **Latency Bake-Off Template: GCP vs Alibaba vs Dedicated VPS**, keep operable boredom: written rails, measured cents, index context when relevant, and a skip that needs no apology. Process quality beats ticket volume.
